4 Top Speakeasy Bars in Paris

Speakeasy bars were popularized in the United States during the prohibition era (1920-30s). It has been noted that the word “speakeasy” came from “speak-softly shops” which originated in the 19th century in England and Ireland. The title demanded secrecy from customers when illegally ordering alcoholic beverages in establishments prohibited from selling alcohol.

Nowadays, speakeasies refer to legal bars and establishments offering a more relaxed, intimate environment in comparison to other crowded establishments. Many of these speakeasies are hidden behind stores, laundromats, and other everyday places most people would overlook. You can enter these establishments full of unique furniture and extraordinary cocktails by pulling a secret lever, pressing a button, or saying the password. Paris is full of speakeasies, but I have four favorites, check them out!

There are no signs outside this establishment, but behind a red door on Rue Charlot is one of Paris’ coolest bars. The red door mimics those used during the prohibition era to signal where a speakeasy lies. Once allowed entry, you are greeted by a waiter or waitress holding water for you and your guests.

Putting them apart from other bars in the area, Little Red Door’s menu is inspired by creative flavors, anthropology, and social science. According to their website,

Since 2020 Little Red Door has pioneered a farm-to-glass model for drinks and menu creation, working directly with French producers across the country to source produce from which it creates unique homemade products that form the base of their minimally named drinks (i.e. Citrus, Carrot, Chamomile), firmly placing the producer at the centre of the guest experience.

If you’re looking for a unique, secretive bar in Paris, there is one tucked behind a grocery store. L’ Épicier is a new speakeasy perfect for a romantic night out. As you navigate the store, you will come across the magic entrance to the bar. Inside, you are met with smells of incense and a dark ambiance. The oriental decorations are made up of colourful rugs, lanterns, and unique seating arrangements.

The atmosphere makes this bar worth visiting itself, but the cocktail menu puts it over the top. The combination of unique flavours creates a full-body sensation you won’t ever want to go away. A personal favourite of mine is the Kawah Bunga; A sweet and smooth cocktail with black coffee, lemon juice, homemade honey caramel, and Monkey Shoulder Triple Malt Whiskey infused with coffee beans and tanka beans. The unique menu and atmosphere make for an unforgettable night, if you have not been already, I highly recommend you try it on your next visit to Paris!

Conveniently located below the famed restaurant Pink Mamma, this speakeasy bar holds a dark, natural, and curious ambiance. Lined with biodomes and herbs in glass domes, this magical place captures anyone’s attention. In a sense, it feels like you are walking into an old potion shop, one you would read about in books, and the drinks only elevate this feeling. Some drinks have fog coming from the top, and others are served in antique-looking glassware, transporting you back in time. With a wide selection of drinks and cocktails, this speakeasy is perfect for date night or drinks before reservations at Pink Mamma.

10th arrondissement

Hidden behind a real, in-use laundromat is a clever speakeasy, allowing you to escape from the normal, busy bars of Paris. Inside you will find a vintage charm meets contemporary chic environment, with colorful carpets and decorations,as well as faded, antique walls.

Perfect for a night out with friends, the menu is full of craft cocktails and fruity specialties. However, if you find a menu online, just know it may not be accurate. Each quarter Lavomatic updates their menu to allow for more in-season drinks and food. What’s even more fun is that Lavomatic offers a mixology class! You can learn how to create your own cocktails, and the science behind it.
